Soybeans

History
The soybeans were first cultivated in China nearly 6,000 years ago and it was first introduced in Europe in the 1700s. The soybean has become one of the most important beans in the world. Today, soy is a multi-billion dollar industry that provides feed to millions of livestock on every continents and that has become a major part of people's diets (especially in Asia).  The bean provides a good source of protein around the world and for different usage such as vegetable oil, animal feed and foodstuffs (tofu, miso, natto, soymilk, etc).

The Soybean Production
Soybeans were first produced and cultivated in China, but the United States is one of the most important producing country (More than 30 states are growing soybeans). Another important producer is Brazil where soybeans are one of their main exported product (with Coffee and Sugar). The global soy production has nearly doubled since the mid 1990s.The majority of the soybeans production is allocated for oil and for soybean meal ( animal feed) and a small portion of the crop is for tofu, soy milk and other popular soy products (foodstuffs).

The Soybean Global Market
More than 50% of the world's soybean production occurs in the Americas. The United States are exporting more than 35% of the world's soybeans and this commodity has a significant impact on the farming industry since the 1920's.

Soybeans as a Commodity
Soybean demand is booming because the world market for soybeans is huge and continues to grow year after years. The livestock such as cattle and pigs are consuming millions of tons of soybean meal per year (soybean meal is produced from soybeans) and because the population grows in certain countries such as China, the demand is very high. Therefore, the high levels of demand coupled with high liquidity leave a lot of room for trading the soybeans on the commodity market (spot of future contracts).

Soybean Trading
There are two main markets for soybeans :

  • Food market: Soybeans are used across the world by companies for animal feed (livestock) and for human consumption. Soybeans are considered as an excellent source of protein and a low-cost food additive.
  • Fuel market: Soybeans are used by certain companies for the manufacture of biodiesel.
